Thanks to women like Miuccia Prada, Stella McCartney, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and many more, this issue is coming out! They have used their creative leadership job to make a change and progress! Fashion is a place for women, not just for selling to them!
MIUCCIA PRADA, creative director of Prada
Miuccia Prada, this iconic fashion designer wasn’t always involved in fashion, she studied political science at first. In 1979, she joined the family business and right now she is one of the most influential woman in the fashion industry. Her background as a feminist fighter, can be seen through her creations: lack of sensual pieces, as they would be defined “sexy” by men. Prada is elegance and minimalism.
MARIA GRAZIA CHIURI, creative director of womenswear, Dior
Maria Grazie Chiuri was the first-ever female to be the head of womenswear design at Christian Dior. The French fashion house also saw a significant increase in sales in 2019, thanks to her! She is really concerned about feminism. Her efforts surrounding gender equality haven’t gone unnoticed. In fact, she received the Legion of Honor, France’s highest civilian distinction, from the country’s gender equality minister Marlène Shiappa in 2019.
STELLA McCARTNEY, Creative director and founder of the homonymous brand
Stella McCartney is the pioneer of sustainability in fashion! She practices what she preaches, season after season, in all her collections. The designer has 32 years of experience, including a stint as creative director of Chloé. In addition to her sustainability efforts, she’s also known for her very British and feminine design aesthetic. She also designed Meghan Markle’s dress for the Royal Wedding reception!
AURORA JAMES, Founder and creative director of Brother Vellies
She is the founder and creative director of the footwear and handbag brand Brother Vellies. Her label, was born to support the South African, Kenyan, and Moroccan artisans that actually produce the “veldskoen”, these traditional desert boots they are known for. The brand is also eco-friendly, the materials utilized in the design process are vegetable-tanned leathers, recycled tires, hand-carved wood, and feathers died using flowers.
CLARE WAIGHT KELLER, Artistic director of Givenchy
After college, she was plucked by Calvin Klein to design for the brand. From there, she moved on to Ralph Lauren, followed by a stint at Gucci. In 2011, she became creative director at Chloé, bringing new life and a unique sense of femininity into the brand! Six years later, with a wealth of experience she became creative director at Givenchy!
