Roberto Gioli - Figurative poet of female body

A few weeks ago I discovered the wonderful Roberto Gioli’s photos.

Roberto Gioli is an Italian photographer who could be called figurative poet of female body.

In his shoots, the light is a precious but discrete ally, black and white is expressive but not violent, the color is real. Gioli reveals himself as a delicate voyeur that comes close to the intimacy of women and goes well beyond the exposure of a body: poses, looks, nudity investigate the complex emotional system of the female world.

Intimate, passionate, respectful, insatiable, curious.

He told us something about him.

“I was born in Rovigo in Italy. After studying art, I dedicate myself to painting for several years, with ongoing research on the human figure and, in particular women.

The transition to photography was unexpected but natural and introduced me to an art form and work that makes me feel complete and a better person, especially for the direct relationship with the people and things around me.

From my experience in painting comes my approach to the idea and even more attentive to the emotional side, rather than purely technical, formal and compositional.

The female figure has remained at the center of my research, not only because fascinated by the beauty but also and above all to the admiration and respect for the role of women in all its aspects, not only of sensuality and delicacy but also the most brittle and dark, trying to overcome the limitations of a male vision and stereotyped that I always hope to avoid.

From the technical point of view I started with the use of digital but soon I switched to analog photography, because the latter approach in meeting more emotional and sentimental than the fact that requires more study and attention to every single shot, the one that unfortunately there is a risk of losing too easily shooting in digital. In particular, use medium format film in color and black and white. ”

Qualche settimana fa ho scoperto le splendide foto di Roberto Gioli, fotografo italiano che potremmo definire poeta figurativo del corpo femminile.

Sono scatti, i suoi, in cui la luce è alleata preziosa ma discreta, il bianco e nero è espressivo ma non violento, il colore è reale. Gioli si rivela delicato voyeur che si avvicina all’intimitá della donna e va ben oltre lo svelare un corpo: pose, sguardi, nudo indagano il complesso sistema emozionale della sfera femminile.

Intimista, appassionato, rispettoso, insaziabile, curioso.

Di sé ci racconta. “Sono nato a Rovigo in Italia. Dopo studi artistici, mi dedico per diversi anni alla pittura, con una ricerca continua sull’immagine e la figura umana, in particolare femminile.

Il passaggio alla fotografia è stato inaspettato ma naturale e mi ha fatto scoprire una forma artistica e lavorativa che mi fa sentire completo e una persona migliore, sopratutto per il rapporto diretto con le persone e ciò che mi circonda. Dalla mia esperienza in pittura deriva il mio approccio maggiormente attento all’idea e anche al lato emotivo, piuttosto che quello puramente tecnico, formale e compositivo.

La figura femminile è rimasta al centro della mia ricerca, non solo perchè affascinato dalla bellezza ma anche e sopratutto per l’ammirazione e il rispetto nei confronti della figura della donna in tutti i suoi aspetti, non solo di sensualità e delicatezza ma anche quelli più fragili e oscuri; cercando di superare i limiti di una visione maschile e stereotipata che spero sempre di evitare.

Dal punto di vista tecnico sono partito con l’uso del digitale ma presto sono passato alla fotografia analogica, perché ritrovo maggiormente in quest’ultima un approccio emotivo e sentimentale oltre al fatto che impone maggiore studio e attenzione per ogni singolo scatto, quello che purtroppo si rischia troppo facilmente di perdere scattando in digitale.

In particolare utilizzo pellicole di medio formato a colori e bianco e nero.”
